Most weddings held on 6 September last year

In Slovenia, more marriages and divorces were recorded last year than the year before. A total of 6,455 couples married, while 2,172 divorced. On average, 18 couples married each day and six divorced. The highest number of weddings took place on 6 September, according to data from Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia.

In 2025, 6,455 couples entered into marriage, 102 or two percent more than a year earlier. Among them were 75 same-sex marriages, including 34 between men and 41 between women.

There were three marriages per 1,000 inhabitants. The highest rate was recorded in the Pomurje statistical region with 3.3 marriages, while the lowest was in the Goriška region with 2.2.

The most popular wedding day was 6 September, when 180 couples married. On average, 18 marriages were concluded per day. August recorded the highest number of weddings with 944, while January had the fewest with 219. Most couples chose Saturday, with 3,624 weddings or 56 percent.

At the time of marriage, grooms were on average 37.5 years old, nearly three years older than brides, whose average age was 34.9. For 5,764 grooms and 5,770 brides, the marriage was their first. In 5,380 cases, both partners were marrying for the first time. First-time grooms were on average 32.6 years old, while first-time brides were about two years younger at 30.9.

Most marriages were between Slovenian citizens. In 5,064 cases or 78 percent, both partners were Slovenian citizens. In 546 marriages, the groom was Slovenian and the bride a foreign citizen, most often from Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 523 cases, a Slovenian bride married a foreign groom, again most often from Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 322 marriages, both partners were residents of Slovenia with foreign citizenship.

Last year, 2,172 couples divorced, 108 or five percent more than the year before. On average, six marriages ended each day, meaning one divorce per 1,000 inhabitants.

The average age at divorce was 47.8 for men and 45 for women. Marriages lasted on average 14.3 years. A total of 46 couples divorced within the first year of marriage.

Half of the divorced couples had no minor dependent children, while the other half had a total of 1,801 children. At the time of divorce, 48 percent were entrusted to mothers, 47 percent to both parents and four percent to fathers.
