LISBON - American Brandon McNulty is the winner of the opening stage, a time trial, at the Vuelta a España. The American national time trial champion beat Czech Mathias Vacek by two seconds and Belgian Wout Van Aert by three seconds on the 12 km route between Lisbon and Oeiras in Portugal. Slovenian star Primož Roglič finished in eighth place, 17 seconds behind.
ARNHEM - The current leader in the motocross world championship standings, Tim Gajser, will start Sunday’s race in Arnhem, the Netherlands, from the fifth position, which he secured in the qualifiers. His lead in the championship is now 15 points, after finishing third in the qualifiers and gaining two points ahead of his closest rival, Spaniard Jorge Prado.
SEU D'URGELL - Slovenian canoeists won four medals at the World Championships in Wildwater Canoeing in Sabero, Spain. Anže Urankar became the world champion in the sprint, Nejc Žnidarčič won silver, and Ana Šteblaj claimed bronze. In the team event, the men's trio of Urankar, Žnidarčič, and Oven took the gold medal in the sprint.
KRAKÓW - The Slovenian canoeing and kayaking team won two more medals at the European Championships for juniors and under-23s in slalom in Kraków. Žiga Lin Hočevar won silver, and his sister Eva Alina Hočevar claimed bronze.
KRAKÓW - Belgian Thibau Nys is the winner of the sixth stage of the Tour of Poland. The 21-year-old won the uphill sprint on the route from Wadowice to Bukovina. Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard retained the overall lead after finishing fourth, while Slovenian Matej Mohorič came in ninth.
LJUBLJANA - The Slovenian women’s volleyball team won their second friendly match against Romania. This time, they triumphed 3-1 in sets at the Maks Pečar Sports Hall in Črnuče, Ljubljana.
KOPER/MURSKA SOBOTA - In the 5th round of the Prva Liga Telemach, Koper defeated Nafta 1903 3-0 (0-0), while Bravo won 3-2 (3-1) against Mura in an away match.
ERFURT - Lia Apostolovski, the only Slovenian representative at the athletics meeting in Sondershausen, Germany, finished second in the high jump with a height of 1.93 m. The winner was Germany's Christina Honsel, who also jumped 1.93 m but with fewer attempts.
PARIS - Slovenian cyclist Eugenia Bujak will race for Cofidis next season, the team announced on its website. The current member of UAE Team ADQ will play a supporting role, having signed a one-year contract, according to the French team.
SPIELBERG - Italian Francesco Bagnaia is the winner of the sprint race in the MotoGP World Championship in Spielberg, Austria. Spaniard Jorge Martin, who had led the championship so far, finished second, tying with Bagnaia at the top of the standings, both with 250 points. Aleix Espargaro, also from Spain, took third place.
ALBERTVILLE - Belgian Justine Ghekiere won the penultimate, seventh stage of the Tour de France Femmes. The Belgian cyclist was the best from the breakaway in the challenging stage from Champagnole to Grand Bornand. There were no significant changes among the top contenders, with Polish rider Kasia Niewiadoma remaining in the lead.
BARCELONA - Mounir Nasraoui, the father of 17-year-old Spanish football star Lamine Yamal, who was stabbed in the outskirts of Barcelona on Wednesday evening, has been discharged from the hospital, reports the French news agency AFP, citing Spanish media.v
