Daily overview in English

A review of daily sports events with a focus on the standings of Slovenian teams and individuals both domestically and internationally.

BLED - The Slovenian ice hockey team has gathered in Bled, where they will conduct most of their preparations for one of the most important competitions of the year. At the end of August and the beginning of September, they will face the qualification tournament in Riga for a spot in the 2026 Winter Olympics. Slovenia's opponents in Riga will be France, the host Latvia, and Ukraine. Only the first place team will qualify for the Olympics in Milan and Cortina. Notably absent from the roster is Slovenia's star player Anže Kopitar, who will miss the national team campaign due to his preparations for the new NHL season in North America.

MADRID - Belgian Wout Van Aert has won the 191.2 km third stage of the Vuelta a España, from Louse to Castelo Branco. Slovenian star Primož Roglič safely crossed the finish line with the same time as the winner and is currently seventh overall, 30 seconds behind.

MULHOUSE - Slovenian cyclist Gal Glivar finished second in the second stage of the Tour de l'Avenir, the U23 version of the Tour de France. After a successful breakaway and a battle for the stage win, the 22-year-old Slovenian has moved up to second place overall. Besides Glivar and Turk, Slovenia is represented in France by Anže Ravbar, Jaka Marolt, and Teo Pečnik.

NEW YORK - The qualifying rounds for the last tennis Grand Slam of the season, the US Open, have begun in New York. Slovenia has already lost its highest-ranked WTA player, Tamara Zidanšek, who was defeated in straight sets by the American Varvara Lepchenko. Two other Slovenians will compete in the qualifiers: Veronika Erjavec will face Frenchwoman Manon Leonard in the first round, while Dalila Jakupović will meet Britain's Yuriko Miyazaki.

LJUBLJANA - Slovenian goalkeeper Vid Belec announced on Instagram that he has ended his international career. From 2014 to 2024, he was the backup goalkeeper for Samir Handanović and Jan Oblak, playing in 21 international matches over ten years.

LJUBLJANA - Slovenian Aleš Česen and Briton Tom Livingstone successfully climbed a new route on the west ridge of the 7,952-meter-high Gasherbrum III in the Karakoram at the beginning of August, making it only the third ascent of this near-eight-thousand-meter peak on the Pakistan-China border. They named the new route "Edge of Entropy." The climb, which involved overcoming 2,000 vertical meters, was rated ED+, the elevated highest grade on the French six-point scale.
