JEREZ - Australian cyclist Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R) is the winner of the sixth stage of the Vuelta a España. On the route from Jerez to Yunquera (185.5 km), he emerged victorious after attacking from a breakaway group and also took the red jersey as the overall leader. Prior to this, it was worn by Slovenian ace Primož Roglič, who finished 6:31 minutes behind. Roglič is now second overall, 4:51 minutes behind the Australian.
YEREVAN - The footballers of Celje lost 0:1 to Pyunik in Yerevan in the first leg of the final round of qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League. The return leg will be played in a week.
STOCKHOLM - The footballers of Maribor lost 0:1 to Djurgården in Stockholm in the first leg of the final round of qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League. The return leg will take place in a week at Ljudski vrt.
RIJEKA - The footballers of Olimpija played a 1:1 draw against Rijeka in the first leg of the final round of qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League. The return leg will be in a week.
BLED - The Slovenian ice hockey team lost 1:2 to Austria in overtime in a friendly match at Bled as part of preparations for the 2026 Olympic Games qualifiers.
LAUSANNE - Ljubljana's athlete Lia Apostolovski finished eighth in the high jump with 1.88 m at the Diamond League in Lausanne. The winner was world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh. The Ukrainian Olympic champion, world, and European champion jumped 1.99 m. At the event, another Slovenian, Žan Rudolf, paced the 1500 m race in which Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen broke his meeting record with 3:27.83. Young Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the newly crowned Olympic champion in Paris, came within twenty-hundredths of the 800 m world record held by fellow Kenyan David Rudisha.
LUOYANG - Nejc Peterlin won the bronze medal at the Junior Track Cycling World Championships, which began in Luoyang, China. He finished third in the points race.
NEW YORK - At the US Open, top seed Jannik Sinner will face home player Mackenzie McDonald. The men's top seeds in the upper half of the draw include Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Russian Daniil Medvedev. In the lower half, Serbian Novak Djokovic will begin his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam title. Djokovic will face a qualifier in the first round. Last year’s men's champion was Djokovic, while American Coco Gauff will defend her title in the women's competition. Gauff will begin her campaign for a second victory at Flushing Meadows against French player Varvara Gracheva. In the upper half of the draw, top seed Iga Swiatek from Poland will also face a qualifier in her opening match.
