LJUBLJANA - Slovenian cycling star Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) continues to convincingly lead the UCI World Rankings with 10,928 points. He is slightly trailed by Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who won both the road race and the time trial at the Paris Olympics, even in the absence of the Slovenian ace. There are no changes in the following positions, with Dane Jonas Vingegaard (4770.5) remaining third ahead of Belgian Jasper Philipsen (4450) and Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel (4430). The second-best Slovenian cyclist, Primož Roglič, holds the sixth place with 3733.36 points.
MARIBOR - Slovenian football first division club Maribor has strengthened its team with 18-year-old Danish defender Adam Rasheed, the club announced. Previously a member of Torino's youth teams and a player for Iraq's youth national team, Rasheed joined the Štajerska side as a free agent. Maribor signed a contract with the young player until summer 2026, with an option to extend for another year.
NOVO MESTO - Twenty-one-year-old forward Jaka Klobučar has returned to Krka after two seasons with Ljubljana's Ilirija, the Novo Mesto team announced in a press release. Klobučar started his sports career in the youth teams of the Novo Mesto club. Two years ago, he moved to Ljubljana's Ilirija. In the NKBM league, he played an average of 23 minutes per game, recording nine points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.
PARIS - The International Sports Press Association (AIPS), which marked its 100th anniversary with an online event on Friday, celebrated the anniversary with an official ceremony at UNESCO's headquarters during the Paris Olympics. The association was founded in Paris in 1924 before the start of that year's Olympics. They also announced the best athletes of the century, chosen by more than 900 sports journalists from around the world. The titles went to American tennis legend Serena Williams and American boxing icon Muhammad Ali, who was born Cassius Clay. World Sports Journalism Day is celebrated on July 2nd, commemorating the first AIPS Congress held in the French capital before the 1924 Olympics.
BUCHAREST - The Romanian Football Federation has appointed 79-year-old Mircea Lucescu as the head coach of the national team, the French news agency AFP reported. He replaced Edward Iordanescu, who decided to step down after leading Romania to the round of 16 at this year's European Championship in Germany.
